While it’s possible to run a notebook Mac off of its battery while in Target Disk Mode, you forgo any monitoring of the battery power levels. If you need a specific cable or adapter, has a wide selection of FireWire, Thunderbolt and USB-C cables and adapters available. But not all adapters are known to work correctly in Target Disk Mode, so if you can, connect directly to the same port type. Using adapters to connect Thunderbolt to FireWire will usually work, as will Thunderbolt to USB-C. Ideally, you should connect similar ports that is FireWire to FireWire, Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt, or USB-C to USB-C. An appropriate cable to make the connection. We recommend shutting down both Macs before proceeding, however. All of the connection types (FireWire, Thunderbolt, and USB-C) support hot connecting, meaning you can connect a cable between the two Macs while they are powered on. That may seem obvious, but it makes sense to point out that Target Disk Mode only works between two Macs you can’t chain multiple Macs together.

This assumes that you have already downloaded a copy of the El Cap install app. If you do get a good boot, you might try to create a bootable USB flash drive installer using "DiskMaker X" (it's the easiest way). You MIGHT get a good boot if the HDD hasn't completely failed yet. get either an external USB3 enclosure, or a USB3/SATA adapter/dongle, and try to connect and boot from the HDD that way. The SSD is already inside the MacBook, is this correct?Īnd the old HDD is now OUT of the MacBook? Just connect the cloned backup, and boot right up to the finder. Your problem illustrates the main reason why I ALWAYS recommend either CarbonCop圜loner or SuperDuper instead of time machine.

I’m really at a loss with what to try next, if I can’t get the MacBook the install media I can’t think of a way to reinstall on the new SSD.īit of background info, I don’t have a spare Mac or Apple device, Only a Windows 10 computer. I’ve tried to get into hardware diagnostics mode using ‘D’ but that doesn’t work I’m not sure why it only picks up the Transcend drive… When I've tried restore from time machine backup with the old hard drive in, no backups are detected. The only USB drive it detects is a Transcend external USB which was used for time machine backups but as I can’t get into recovery mode with the new SSD I can’t restore it. In fact, it doesn’t detect any external drive I've used with TransMac or a DVD with El Capitan on. When I use the ‘Option’ key at boot to select a boot device it only detects the blank SSD, it doesn’t detect the USB. Then I used TransMac with an El Capitan image, restored the image to a USB drive in an attempt to boot into recovery mode and install using the new image onto the new SSD, which fails to work.įirstly, it won’t boot into recovery mode, I’m guessing it’s because there is no recovery mode available as it was on the old HDD and this older Mac has no internet recovery option. I have replaced the hard drive with the SSD which at first wasn’t detected until I formatted it. I’ve also gone in through safe mode to run the various verify and fsck-fy commands which are failing – so I think it’s a bad diskĬarried out PRAM & SMC Resets which have made no difference I suspect the current disk is failing, I can boot it into recovery mode but have only been able to run first aid on the disk once which failed. Ive tried all sorts of things to repair it, as well as replacing the Hard drive with a Crucial MX500 SSD but nothing is working properly.

I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2009, it’s no longer booting properly from the existing hard drive and just gets stuck at the loading screen and eventually reboots in a loop.
